Off The Shelf Festival of Words 2015

Last Saturday we went to Sheffield for an afternoon of games as part of the annual Off The Shelf Festival Of Words.

This is an event we have led for a few years now and is always an enjoyable and relaxed affair. Hosted in Coffee Revolution in the University the set up is perfect, with plenty of tables and space for gaming, and coffee and snacks on tap!

As always happens with regular events it was great to see some familiar faces return, and plenty of new ones too, of all ages.

What Did We Play?!

As always we took boxes of games ready for whoever may cross our path, with our usual mix of new and classic games, and some hard to get treats that make our sessions a bit more unique every time. Lighter, more accessible games that proved popular were Tsuro, Dodekka, Botswana (now known as Wildlife Safari) Battle Sheep and last years smash hit Sushi Go!

Younger attendees enjoyed Word On The Street, Zeus On The Loose and Katamino. All 3 great games for families and constants in our educational programs and games club days for schools across the country.

For those after something a little more with their coffee Forbidden Island went down really well and looked fantastic on show. There were also some key head to head battles too with a range of 2 player games. More traditional style games like Mijnlieff and Gobblet were sweated over profusely, both simple to pick up but provide tons of variation and scope for tactical 'one-up-manship'.

Equally simple to get to grips with is Brave Rats. With only 17 cards in the box this is a perfect example of how a seemingly simple game can prove a lot more tactical. Requiring a perfect mix of strategy and reading your opponent, playing the player is as important as playing the game, and that's where the laughs come from!

Do You Like The Sound Of These Games?

Many of these games and lots, lots more can be found in our store and remember you can play them for free at any of our public events and even better in our Family Zone in May's annual UK Games Expo in Birmingham. We hope you can join us for a game sometime!
